Symptoms

We are all aware of the typical symptoms of allergy season. Congestion, sneezing, watery eyes and cough. Most Oklahomans will suffer from these symptoms at some time throughout the seasons, even if the symptoms are very mild. Many individuals have more severe symptoms, because of their immune system response to various triggers. These triggers are often well known to each individual: grasses, trees, molds, weeds, dust, animal dander, and other local pollens. When exposed to these triggers, our immune system responds by releasing histamine and other chemicals that lead to the symptoms we know as Allergy.

  • Sneezing
  • Tingling
  • Nasal obstruction
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Hives
  • Itching
  • Eye drainage
  • Tickle in the throat
  • Skin rash / redness
  • Wheezing

When allergy leads to sinus dysfunction

When allergies are severe or untreated, other chronic symptoms can emerge. Nasal congestion from allergy can lead to sinus infections, sleep disruption, facial pressure, and pressure in the ear. It can be difficult to understand which symptoms are directly related to allergy, and which symptoms now represent new emerging problems. It may be time to seek medical advice if you are experiencing allergy symptoms that now seem to cause any of the following:

  • Sinus bacterial infection
  • Sinus headache
  • Pressure in the eye
  • Nasal obstruction
  • Sleep disruption
  • Post-nasal drip
  • Facial pain
  • Ear pressure / popping
  • Loss of smell

Diagnosing and managing your allergy symptoms

Oklahoma Sinus Center works closely with you, your primary care physician, your allergist, and other health care professionals to provide a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and therapy. Many options are available to understand which seasonal triggers may be affecting you. Testing for allergy can be as simple as a blood test at your local laboratory, or can involve more thorough skin testing with an Allergist/Immunologist. After testing provides a better understanding of allergy sensitivities, meaningful treatment can begin.

Medical management is always the first and most important approach. Surgery plays a role in helping to manage your symptoms when medical management is under way. Various procedures can be considered, tailored for the individual’s complaints and problems. Let us help you better understand your allergies, the first step in taking control of your symptoms.
